What will my mediation cost?

How much does it cost? That will be one of your first questions. Our aim is to provide you with early and clear advice.

For those mediations where not more than £200,000 (claim and counterclaim) is in dispute, we offer a fixed fee scheme. Mention this when completing the enquiry form opposite for details.

In some mediations, e.g. boundary disputes and rights of way, monetary compensation may not be the principal issue. However, the factual background may be tangled and the way forward tricky. In those cases we will discuss with you a suitable fee for a ½ day or full-day mediation to cover the mediator’s time. If the mediation runs over, then most of our mediators charge an hourly rate, split equally between the parties. Please remember that we need to add VAT to whatever you are quoted.

Often we are able to host a mediation at one of our six centres. Unfortunately that is not always possible. In that case, the parties will have to arrange suitable alternative accommodation. Sometimes a party has a solicitor (or other adviser) who can host the mediation. If not, meeting rooms must be booked, and at least one each for the parties is necessary. Don’t forget that an all-day mediation means that arrangements are needed to ensure the parties are fed at lunchtime, and tea, coffee, water, etc. are available.

In boundary and rights of way disputes, where a site visit may help the mediator, those are often held at the properties in question – the mediator gets his / her exercise for the day walking between the properties!

Some cases are suitable for a telephone mediation. If yours is, we will propose a fee, less than an ‘in person’ mediation.

If you want your professional advisers to attend the mediation, then the cost of that is met by you.

Please bear in mind that in very many mediations neither party will cover their legal or professional costs from the other party. A successful mediation is like a one-all draw; hence the difficulty in recovering costs.
